Fore / Adventure | The story behind the brand
Who’s behind the brand?
Fore / Adventure is run by us; Dan and Jade Scott (with our three small girls usually one step ahead!) and our multi-talented team of helpers, we are based in Studland, a beautiful sandy peninsula in Dorset. It is here that we get up to a whole heap of wild food focused adventures on our coastal patch, from sea kayaking to snorkelling, feasting to fishing, bushcraft to beach school, and foraging wild food to wild camping, but the common thread that ties our adventuring days together is that we love the simple things and we want to show people that adventures can be simple, with a bit of a nudge and a helping hand they can do it too and with the skills they’ve learnt they can keep on doing it long after they’ve left us.
What’s important to us
We know from our own experience of being outside and outdoor adventures that it makes our hearts sing and gives us that fuzzy, inner glow type feeling. There is something deeply satisfying about breaking out of your four walls – with rosy cheeks, muddy knees and windswept hair, it’s good for the soul. But it’s not just the feel-good stuff that makes being in the great outdoors important, being at one with nature stimulates and supports learning, it teaches our children how to respect, value and understand the environment and the buck doesn’t stop there, us grown ups could learn a thing or two along the way too.
What inspires us?
We are completely immersed in nature here in Studland, watching our environment change through the seasons is a constant source of inspiration. The little signs that spring’s on it’s way, looking out for new shoots and watching how the wild plants we forage change as they grow and flower. The way the tide goes out for miles and miles on spring tides, determining how we interact with the shoreline. When one days catch can be so different from the next depending on the conditions of the day. The changing colours of the heath in autumn, how the sea looks and feels on darker days and how the sand dunes shift on an almost daily basis when the easterly winds blows. Our patch of wild provides us with the most inspiring place to play, seek and wander, something we big kids need just as much as the smaller ones.
How do the seasons affect our work?
Spring, Summer, Autumn and Winter are all seasons for adventures. Now the seasons are beginning to turn we adapt and change our adventures to suit the conditions and celebrate what each new chapter brings. We retreat to more land based experiences throughout the winter months as even though the conditions on the sea don’t stop Dan they can be a tad temperamental for clients!
It is the changing landscape and natural environment that brings us so much interest and allows to offer so many differing experiences throughout the year, coming into Autumn is one of our favourite times as there is so much rich produce to seek out with the hedgerows popping with ripe berries to turn into syrups, jams and sauces and wonderful mushrooms to enjoy. Whatever the time of year there are always edible seaweeds to be found and surprisingly even through the winter edible greens are still out there growing in the wild.
What’s next for Fore?
This year our youngest has begun school so there is now slightly more time to play with during the week!!! This will hopefully allow us to develop our plans for the brand that bit further than we have been able to so far. Watch this space for some announcements coming soon….
