With summer just behind us but the warmth of it still lingering there’s still lots of time to get out and enjoy the great outdoors and nothing beats the back to school feeling that september brings; a time for new beginnings and opportunity to learn new skills or take up a hobby you’ve been thinking of trying for a while, this is the perfect time to get started…here’s our guide to what’s going on in Dorset this Autumn, so go, enjoy some downtime or kick start a new interest…
With a choice of 5 runs, ranging from the Purbeck 3 (5km) right up to the Purbeck Ultra (54 miles) there’s something for everyone- providing you like running!
14th -15th September
Entry ranges from £10 for the 5km run up to £50 for the Ultra.
This festival will combine innovative workshops, presentations, social events, over 100, guided Nordic walks and the UK’s only dedicated Nordic walking Marathon (in fact its almost 27 miles due to the rugged terrain!) there will also be a 16 mile stunning challenge route and a host of walks at all levels.

Whether you’ve sea kayaked before or not we have some great instructional courses to get you out on the sea in a kayak in no time. Join us for a half day introduction, a full day or book a block of lessons over a 6 week period to get yourself really confident sea kayaking around the stunning Dorset coast.

Cloudscapes is a contemplative artwork where you are invited to stop and cloudgaze and consider your place in the world. The piece is set outdoors — creating a natural cloud-gazing arena.
Lie back on giant comfortable beanbags and listen on headphones to the 45-minute piece narrated by Gobbledegook founder, artist and creator Lorna Rees, where she soothes you with her personal musings on cloud formation interspersed with stories about her relationship with the troposphere and on the journey of a lifetime she took, accompanied by her Father. An enjoyable, uplifting and reflective experience.
Saturday 15th September
Arts by the Sea is focused on delivering a packed and fun filled festival celebration, while shining a light on mental health and breaking down some social barriers surrounding it. The weekend will consist of an explosion of art with many fantastic events taking place throughout the town which everyone can be involved in. The festival is delivered by Bournemouth Borough Council with the support of the Arts Council England and aims to provide inclusive and accessible events across a range of disciplines, most of which will be free and unrestricted to attend so there definitely will be something for everyone to enjoy.
Join us at Fore Adventure for one of our awesome Kayak, Fish, Forage and Feast events. Take to the water to learn how to fish from a kayak and learn about the marine life in Studland Bay- as well as the various seaweeds and coastal plants. Once you’re back on dry land we’ll take you on a foraging walk and end the day with a three course meal made using ingredients you’ll have learnt about by our chef in a beautiful seaside location.

Join Dorset Food and Drink for their annual festive foodie event with over 50 amazing producers selling distinctively Dorset & seasonal produce set in the lovely grounds of Athelhampton House and Gardens. We go to this event every year and delight in finding new local producers and gorging on delicious festive treats. If you go on the Sunday your little ones get to meet Father Christmas with proceeds going to

There will be plenty of fun activities on offer this half-term. Take part in the Great Escape (teddy bear zip wire) and watch missiles launch from the castle’s medieval siege engine. Celebrate the colours of autumn with the family castle quest and crafts in the Outer Bailey.

Join us to kayak out to world famous Old Harry Rocks, explore the awesome cliffs and learn more about the local area, geology and history of studland and wild foods enroute. We run 2 hour and half day tours every day in Studland until the end of October, (aswell as Stand Up Paddleboarding and various other adventures!) so why not come along and take advantage of the last of the warmer weather, our 2 hour tour is perfect for families with younger children!

Nationally renowned for its naturalistic displays of ornamental grasses, 2019 sees the launch of the first Festival of Grasses at Knoll Gardens. The Festival marks the 25th anniversary of Neil Lucas’s arrival at Knoll and runs throughout the autumn, when the garden is at its peak. Join us on a foraging or bushcraft course this Autumn to lrarn your wild plants and learn the tricks of our trade and let our top trained bushcraft buffs share their woodland skills with you. You can spend a day exploring what the seasons have to offer, foraging and learning tree and plant identification. Alongside this we will practice a whole host of bushcraft skills, from shelter building to water purification and woodwork to fire building before feasting on soup with foraged goodies by the seaside. An unbeatable experience.
