Kayak Foraging At Old Harry – Half Day Reviews

“Excellent fun and extremely educational. Dan along with his staff ran the group in a relaxed yet safe manner allowing for the slower paddlers to keep with the group. Dan loves to stop and have a quick snack of seaweed! The half day kayak tour or old Harry rocks really is for all ages and abilities. I can’t recommend this activity/educational company enough! I believe they also do kayak fishing and snorkelling and coasteering! Great location, plenty of parking, a nice cafe next door, and clean toilets…Well….it is a National Trust beach.”

The Observant Guest

“This was a birthday treat from my daughter knowing that I liked kayaking and anything concerning wildlife etc. So this morning was an ideal treat. And it didn’t disappoint. We were warmly greeted by Dan and his assistant and the foraging information started right by the hut…….what can be done with nettles!! Dan was a mind of information ably assisted by the ranger and graduate. There were only 6 in our group so personal attention, a slow pace to Old Harry rocks whilst all the time commenting on seaweed, birds, rocks, and plants. We even managed a swim in our wetsuits which was an added bonus. It was a great morning on the water and I would highly recommend it to anyone.”

“Many thanks to Daniel and Kevin. I wanted to start my birthday weekend off with something active which we would all enjoy as a family ranging in age from 8 – 60 years. This was memorable and such fun, plus we learned a thing or two along the way! Brilliant and highly recommended.”

“We had the most fantastic day! Kyle was a great host. The day was lost of Fun, relaxing and thoroughly enjoyable. The excellent October weather was a real bonus! They made it really easy for us to go Kayaking (as the Kayaks are already on the beach) the foraging was really interesting and informative and Dan has a great sense of humour! The meal at the end of the day was outstanding, first class cuisine! We were so impressed, top restaurants would be pushed to provide better. Thank you so much, we can’t wait to do another experience with these guys.”

Kayak Foraging At Old Harry – Half Day Questions

General Information

We offer a wide range of kayaking foraging experiences in Studland on the Dorset coast which caters for all levels of ability. If you would rather stay on dry land head over to our foraging page for our other wild food courses and adventures.

Join us on one of our kayak foraging adventures this summer. We’ll investigate the life in our bay by foraging from the kayaks, identifying wild plants, and foraging for edible seaweeds as we go. You’ll be brimming with knowledge on what to look out for along our shores as well as the all-important preparation techniques. This kayak foraging adventure will start from our base in Studland in Dorset and head out to explore the iconic sea stacks of Old Harry Rocks. We will stop en route to seek out wild plants and seaweeds.  This course is designed to be vegan-friendly so we don’t forage for crustaceans on this trip, if you want to explore the seashore further then take a look at our kayak, fish, and foraging trips.

Out From Our Hutquarters

On this adventure, you will head out from our base on Middle Beach which is a beautiful sheltered bay out to explore further along the coastline towards Old Harry Rocks.  This is the perfect adventure if you want to discover coastal wild food and explore the stunning Jurassic coastline at the same time and no experience of kayaking is necessary.

Before we take to the ocean by kayak we will forage en route to the beach with you for an opportunity to share wild plants on land as well as on the sea. Nature’s larder is forever changing and Springtime brings us new shoots, like wild garlic, alexanders, and cleansing cleavers, in summer we are treated with edible blooms and more gorgeous green goodies, and an array of sea vegetables. Autumn delivers nourishing nuts and a bounty of berries.  Even in winter you can still forage and find yourself wild foods to eat. Best of all once on the kayaks we have an abundance of edible seaweeds on the sea all year round so the larder is never empty.

  • In winter you will need to wear a base layer under our wetsuit (manmade fabrics are ideal as cotton will retain water). Hats and gloves are a good idea too, as well as a snug fleece and some warm socks for afterward!
